چکیده

Recently, a new WDM optical network infrastructure named SMART [1], which is capable of dynamically setting up, modifying, and tearing down optical connections, was proposed. The performance of SMART is determined by the performance of its hyperchannels, which are essentially optical buses or light-trails. Previously proposed MAC protocols for unidirectional optical buses can be used as distributed medium access control protocols for hyperchannels. However, these protocols require optical detection and they are either unfair, or not work-conserving. In this paper, we propose a class of workconserving, collision-free, detection-free, and fair MAC protocols for opportunistic hyperchannels which are tailored hyperchannels for SMART. We compare our proposed MAC protocols with known pi-persistent CSMA protocols and priority-based CSMA protocol by simulations. We show that the performances of our proposed protocols are much better than that of pi-persistent CSMA and that of priority-based CSMA protocol in terms of throughput and fairness. keywords Optical network, WDM, MAC, CSMA, SMART network, light-trail, opportunistic hyperchannel

Fully Distributed Work-Conserving MAC Protocols for Opportunistic Optical Hyperchannels Citation

Light-trail is proposed as a candidate to carry IP traffic over wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks given its capability of accommodating multi-granularity traffic by time-division multiplexing (TDM). Light-trail’s unidirectional shared-media multicast nature makes it hard to implement distributed access control and restricts that at most one packet transmission can take pla...

Throughput Analysis for Persistent CSMA Systems

The channel throughput for a finite number of packet broadcasting users is analyzed for random access protocols, including slotted persistent carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) with and without collision detection and unslotted persistent CSMA with and without collision detection. We consider both pand 1-persistent CSMA. Our results can be extended to infinite population cases (by taking the ...

On the Capacity of p-Persistent CSMA

The CSMA-based algorithms constitute a heart of contemporary wireless media access control technology. In last decades, various enhancements have been introduced to basic CSMA schemes, first of all, in order to support collision avoidance. At the same time, the performance analysis of the p-persistent CSMA has gained a renewed interest recently since the behavior of many CSMA protocols might be...

The random access protocols with multi packet reception (MPR), which include both slotted-Aloha and slotted τ-persistent CSMA protocols. For both protocols, each node makes a transmission attempt in a slot with a given probability. The transmission channel is divided into equal slot using slottedAloha, then CSMA is used to check whether the channel is idle or not. CSMA is used to avoid collisio...

The Effect of Exerting Adequate Persistence in Collision Avoidance Protocols

Many medium-access control (MAC) protocols based on a collision-avoidance handshake between the sender and the receiver have been proposed for wireless networks. To date, however, the analysis of these protocols has assumed non-persistent strategies in sending control packets for collision avoidance. The persistent strategies discussed in the past for CSMA and CSMA/CD provide performance improv...
